A review on the relationship between Archaeology and Geology

Abstract

The paper examines the contributions of the disciplines in the science to the study 
of archaeology. Archaeology utilizes principles or theories, methodologies and 
collaborations of different scientific disciplines to study the artifacts and features 
from archaeological sites and contemporary human societies. This paper 
acknowledges the contributions of several branches of science to archaeological 
studies. However, it accords special attention to geology, a discipline that commonly 
shares some theories, research techniques and methods with archaeology. It must 
be understood that geological theories and interpretations have aided 
archaeological investigations in several ways. This study therefore seeks to examine 
the nature of the relationship or contributions of the disciplines of geology to 
archaeological investigations. The paper argues that geologists and archaeologists 
have over the years been addressing issues of common interest in the study of the 
human past and the history of the earth.
