Field Evaluation of Carbon Dioxide and Light as Attractants in Mosquito Trap

Abstract

In order to keep an eye on mosquito populations and diseases carried by them, 
Mosquito traps are essential. The effectiveness of mosquito traps has been utilized 
in surveillance programs to support the deployment and adjustment of control 
measures. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the mosquito trap's ability to 
attract mosquitoes using light and carbon dioxide produced by yeast-fermented 
sugar. The experiment used a JAT-17 trap; four traps were placed near to each other 
in the environmental garden; the first had light only, the second had CO2 only, and 
The third had both light and CO2 combined. The final trap was left empty to act as 
the experiment's control. The results of this study showed that the synergistic effect 
of light and yeast-fermented CO2 was more effective at trapping mosquitoes than 
either attractant alone, with the combination showing the highest percentage catch 
of 48.8%, followed by light alone with 29.5% and CO2 alone with 17.8%, while the 
control showed the lowest percentage catch of 3.9%. Additionally, the findings 
indicate that just two species—Culex quinquifasciatus and Aedes aegypti, with 
89.2% and 10.8% occurrences, respectively—were detected during the trial. As a 
result, according to the study's findings, monitoring mosquito populations and 
vectors will be better done with the combination of light and CO2. People are also 
encouraged to take a bath and turn off the light before going to bed because both 
Light and odor are strong mosquito attractants.
