Abstract

In this work, non-equilibrium flows were studied using the lattice Boltzmann method: (1)
laminar to turbulent by-pass transition on a flat-plate at high upstream turbulent intensity
(6%) (2) boundary layer development on a NACA0012 airfoil for various angles of attack
(3◦, 4.5◦ and 6◦) using large eddy simulations. Numerical simulations are performed using
the transient and compressible lattice Boltzmann solver SIMULIA PowerFLOW. The
transition to turbulence on the flat-plate and the separation bubble size and locations on
the airfoil with varying flow conditions are captured well and in close validation with
literature. Future works involve running airfoil cases at different upstream turbulent
intensity.
